What are the pre-requisites for ACLS and PALS?
To take any ACLS or PALS course (Provider or Renewal), you must hold a valid Heart & Stroke Foundation BLS (BLS) certificate that was completed within the past 12 months. Certificates from other organizations are not accepted.
Fortunately, BLS is included in all of our ACLS and PALS courses so there is no need to take it beforehand if yours is not valid.
For all Renewal courses, your previous ACLS or PALS course must have been completed within the last 27 months. In addition, both ACLS and PALS courses require a working ability to identify ECG rhythms.
Course Prep
All of our courses benefit from pre-course work and preparation.
Some of them have specific requirements that must be completed before the instructor-led session(s).
Check our Course Prerequisites page for more details about each course.
Is the Basic Life Support (BLS) course the same as CPR?
The BLS course is a course we offer though the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSF).
It is usually considered equivalent to CPR-C or CPR with AED.
Here are some highlights from the HSF BLS course page:
The BLS course focuses on building knowledge so you are confident and ready to perform high-quality CPR in a wide variety of settings. The course covers:
- Chain of Survival
- 1-rescuer / 2-rescuer CPR
- High-quality chest compressions with a feedback device
- Multi-rescuer team CPR
- Adult, Child and Infant CPR and relief of choking
- Use of an AED
- Effective ventilations using a barrier device and bag-mask device
- EXPANDED: Opioid-associated life-threatening emergencies
- NEW: Role of the CPR coach; Maternal cardiac arrest; Anaphylaxis; Drowning; Heart attack and stroke; and, Other life-threatening emergencies
The HSF only accepts their BLS course as a pre-requisite for ACLS and PALS courses.
SkillStat bundles BLS with all ACLS and PALS courses offered in British Columbia. It is automatically included in the course tuition.
I'd like to book a private course, but my colleagues and I don't have a location we can use.
No problem. As long as you have a minimum of 6 people or more for a course, and you can commit to a registration deadline for all of your participants, we can take care of booking a training venue.
Will SkillStat come to my location to deliver a course?
Yes – we love coming to your office, clinic or training room! It’s great for learning how to manage emergencies in your specific workplace, and it’s good for team building.
We do private courses for groups of 6 or more people. There are two ways we can facilitate payment for a private course:
- We can publish a course on our website, mark it private, and have people register individually.
- We can create a contract with you and have your organization pay for the course.
Just contact us, and we’d be happy to discuss the details of a private course booking. Or you are welcome to call us at 604 990 0063.
Does a private course cost more per person than regular courses?
Not usually, unless extra travel and accommodation are involved. Even then, we usually cover the first $750.
For private courses paid by a clinic or hospital, pricing depends on the course and the number of people you’re training. We offer flexible options to help you meet your training needs.
Please feel free to get in touch by sending us an email using the Contact Us page, or call 604 990 0063.
How to register for more than 1 course at a time
This is now easier than ever. You can add a course to your cart then click the “Back to Courses” button from your Cart. This will take you to our Course Calendar page where you can find another course to add. Once you have all of your courses added to your cart, click “Checkout” to go through the payment process.
When you add more than 1 course per 12 month period you will receive a discount (typically around 10%).
Looking for a Renewal Course?
Can’t find a Renewal course that works for you? No problem—register for a Provider course instead.
If it’s within 24 months of your last similar course with us, you’ll automatically qualify for the Renewal price at checkout.
All courses still only take 1 day of in-person time.
Do I get a certificate at the end of my ECG course?
Yes, each of our ECG courses comes with a SkillStat certificate.
Our Six Second ECG Essentials and Six Second ECG Master Class are certified by the ANCC and can be used for ANCC contact hours (so is our SEPSA course).
Check out our ECG Course page for more info.
